Community Outreach
This year, the academy of Community Outreach will be led by Eric Johnson and Leah Holschbach. Both third year pharmacy students, the pair hope to continue providing volunteer opportunities within the community for pharmacy students. Teaming up with local pharmacies, the academy organizes numerous blood pressure, osteoporosis, and cholesterol screenings.
New this year, CO plans to join forces with PSW (Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin) with the hopes to further promote National Pharmacy Month (October). Banners will be hung, newspaper articles will be written, and radio announcements will be made. Also a long-time favorite of the Academy, the Poison Prevention program will continue. The Poison Prevention program comprises of a group of 4-5 pharmacy students traveling to area elementary and middle schools teaching younger children about the dangers of common household poisons. An interactive skit is performed (complete with a NEW script!)
The Community Outreach dual hope to start-up a new program this year, with the hopes of it becoming a new academy in the near future. Introducing: PROJECT HEARTBURN!!! Project Heartburn will educate the public on ways to avoid and treat heartburn. Screenings will be held at area pharmacies and education material will be made available to the public.
