Operation Immunization
Operation Immunization (OI) works to educate the public about the importance of immunizations. During the 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 school years, the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy won the APhA’s national award for best Operation Immunization. The operation uses a broad range of methods to reach the public with its message, including newspaper advertising, radio interviews and advertising, signage, immunization clinics, and events during national pharmacy week. The operation holds immunization clinics where the public can come to be immunized by a pharmacist or certified pharmacy student. In previous years OI has concentrated on expanding flu shot clinics, travel vaccinations, and getting GloGerm up and running in area elementary schools. Expanding awareness and advertising availability of the HPV vaccine has also been a main focus which we hope to build upon in the 2009-2010 school year. We have many plans for the future including getting a flu shot clinic in the School of Pharmacy, informing the public about pandemics, and expanding legislature to allow pharmacists to vaccinate people under 18 years of age.
